Platelets

Platelets are small cytoplasmic fragments of the megakaryocytes which are found in the bone marrow. They play a major role in normal blood clotting and bleeding prevention. Platelet count below 50x109/l is associated with prolonged clotting and bleeding times, bleeding into the skin and tissue is seen in patients with leukemia, ITP and dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Prostate Specific Antigen

Prostate-specific antigen is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland. Often elevated in people with prostate cancer, inflammation or enlargement of the prostate.

Protein

Protein in the urine usually indicates the presence of kidney disorder and should be present in every sample. Small amount of protein may be present in concentrated urine of normal person and also after strenuous exercise.

R
Red Cell Indices

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) are used to determine the size and hemoglobin content of red blood cells. As well as to calculate the variation in sizes of the red blood cells through red cell distribution width (RDW).

Rheumatoid Arthritis Factor (R.A. Factor)

Rheumatoid arthritis is a severe form of joint disease affecting mainly the joints of the hands and feet. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have high levels of R.A.Factor and this may precede the onset of joint symptoms. A small group of patients however have normal levels.

S
SGOT / AST (aspartate aminotransferase)

This enzyme is present in cells of many organs like liver, heart, skeletal muscle and blood cells. High blood levels are associated with cell destruction in the organs like acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and hepatitis.

SGPT / ALT (alanine aminotransferase)

This enzyme is present in high concentration in liver cells. High blood levels indicate destruction of liver cells and their release into the bloodstream.

T
T4

This hormone is produced by the thyroid gland and regulates the metabolic processes of the body. High levels are seen in the disease hyperthyroidism. Symptoms include weight loss, tremor of hands, anxiety and increased sweating. Hypothyroidism (low levels) is due to reduced production by the gland and results in slowing down of metabolism with mental dullness, physical slowness and weight gain. The gland can be enlarged due to cysts or cancer and the level of free T4 may or may not be affected.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

A glycoprotein hormone produced by the anterior pituitary and is the primary stimulus for thyroid hormone production by the thyroid gland. It is usually tested along with T3 and T4 to determine thyroid disorders.

Treponema pallidum Hemagglutination Assay (TPHA)

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the spirochete, Treponema pallidum. TPHA is a diagnostic test for syphilis and is usually run if a VDRL test result is positive.
